1. Call for Papers: The Energy Charter Treaty and Dispute Resolution Mechanisms Conference. This conference on the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) and dispute resolution mechanisms in the energy sector is set to take place on 5 October 2024, at the International Hellenic University in Thessaloniki, Greece. Key topics for consideration include: The ECT’s ongoing relevance and adaptation to contemporary energy challenges; A critical analysis of dispute resolution mechanisms established by the ECT; Insights into the use of arbitration and mediation for resolving energy disputes; Exploring recent developments and challenges encountered in energy arbitration; A thorough analysis of Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) within the energy sector; and, the crucial role played by international organizations in facilitating effective energy dispute resolution. 3. Call for Papers: Asser Institute Conference on General Principles in EU External Relations Law. General principles play an important role in EU external relations law shaping the legal framework for EU external action as well as strengthening the judicial accountability of the EU as a global actor. At the same time, many questions regarding their specific function, scope and method of identification in EU external relations law remain unclear. What is the function of general principles in EU external relations law? Could these principles be in tension with the objectives and values of the Union’s external action and how is this tension resolved in practice? What is the role of the CJEU in identifying and developing general principles in EU external relations law? What is the role of general principles of international law in EU external relations law? In the light of questions raised by coups and constitutional crises around the world, UCL Laws is organizing an event with Sir Michael Wood KC (Twenty Essex), Professor Roger O’Keefe (Bocconi University), Dr Federica Paddeu (Queen’s College, Cambridge) and Belinda McRae (Twenty Essex) to discuss the recognition and The Identity of Governments in International Law with Dr Niko Pavlopoulos (International Court of Justice), chaired by Professor Alex Mills (UCL). This hybrid Symposium aims to gather academic experts to explore contemporary challenges to social and economic or labour rights and the current state of these rights. Academic experts will also explore opportunities for further action and how international or domestic human rights law can effectively respond to those challenges. The Symposium will be followed by a keynote lecture on ‘Social Rights and Civil Liberties: A False Divide’ by Professor Conor Gearty.
