Pakistan Chapter of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) took the initiative for the empowerment of Women by establishing Women in Safety Excellence (WISE) group which comprised of Safety and Health Professionals, working women, teachers, housewives and students.
ASSP Pakistan chapter held its first WISE seminar in Lahore in the year 2018 with the theme “Role of Women in Safety for Healthy Change in Society”. The event was attended by different organizations including GIZ, Rescue 1122, National Highway and Motorway Police (NH&MP), Fatima Group, Forman Christian College University, WWF, NEC Consultant, WAPDA, University of Lahore, Fatima Memorial Hospital, University of the Punjab, Kinnaird College for Women, University of Engineering & Technology and women serving in various sectors.
Second WISE event was recently held in Islamabad on 3rd January 2020 with the theme “Role of Women in Promoting safety culture in Pakistan’ Among invitees were the first lady of Pakistan, Various ministries, ILO, GIZ, Mari Petroleum, SNGPL, WAPDA, IESCO, Nayatel, And other organizations focused on women rights including Ms Aqsa Khan from WORD and from OXFAM Mr Qazilbash.
Representatives from educational Institutions including RIPAH International University, Islamic University, Bahria University, Bahria Foundation, NUST, UET Taxila, National Fertilizer Corporation (NFC) Institute of Engineering and Al Huda International were present.
President of ASSP Pakistan chapter, Mr. Naeem Subhani welcomed the respected guests and shed some light on the objectives of ASSP. He then shared the progress of Pakistan chapter in past few years and stated its future plans. Importance of women in bringing about a positive change in civil society was specially highlighted. Guest speaker Dr. Anees Ahmed, Vice Chancellor Riphah International University shared his scholastic thoughts on seminar’s theme.
A safety Quiz was arranged to engage the audience and judge the awareness level of audience about safety culture. Thus, the session remained interactive, interesting and informative.
Working together for a safer, stronger Pakistan Partnering with Pakistan Society of Safety Professionals (PSSP) [email protected], www.assp.org.pk Ms Asma Maqbool, Advisor North of ASSP Pakistan chapter and pioneer of WISE in Pakistan introduced WISE as an initiative to promote health and safety among general public. She also moderated the panel discussion where respected panelists were asked to comment on raised questions during the seminar, in view of their long experiences. The main focus of the discussion being off the job and domestic safety. Ms Rafia Hafeez from Bahria Foundation system shared that children are good learners, easily be trained to adopt safety practices and can further inspire parents. It was shared that working women can make work areas safe, and also influence colleagues. Housewives shared they can easily prevent fires, accidents and provide first aid in emergency situation If basic training course is organized by WISE team. Ms Saira Syed shared that driving can be made safe following basic safety rules. Ms Mehwish from PIA shared her views of learning safety principles and spread awareness among loved ones alongside. It was agreed that emergency response contact numbers must be displayed in homes. Fire extinguisher must be made available at home and cars. Family members to be trained to control accidental fires.
It was concluded that women may influence their husbands, children, families, friends and colleagues to follow safety rules and contribute for promoting safety culture in the society. Most of the audience agreed to support initiative taken by WISE. NGOs supporting women empowerment and Educational Institutions invited WISE team to sit together and find ways to collaborate on promotion of safety culture.
WISE coordinator for Islamabad, Ms Salwa Subhani summarized the seminar at the end. She related the theme of seminar with Quranic teachings which reveal that it’s our ethical responsibility to save lives through promoting safety culture. Nation’s progress depends mostly on mothers as to how they raise their children.
She said current target of WISE team is to collaborate with Educational Institutes, develop basic safety training module to give general awareness, offer ‘Train the Trainers’ course for teaching staff and try to change mindset of public with regards to adopting safety culture in their day to day lives.
She emphasized that in order to promote safety culture we must engage our female population from all walks of life. WISE team is willing to collaborate with organizations and work together to make a difference for a safer and stronger Pakistan.
